The Story

About Dusty Rust

Dusty Rust performing live with guitar

From Lewiston to Kansas City.

Dusty Rust started in Lewiston, Idaho and came into his own in Kansas City. That mix still sits at the center of the music: honky tonk, country, and rock 'n roll with enough grit left in it to sound lived in.

Apple Music quotes one of his earliest memories as watching his father bring home a drum set when he was three. That tracks. Even the records feel built for a room full of people instead of a spotless studio.

"Country and Western with a Rock 'N Roll Attitude. All Hat, Stolen Horse."

From 2013 through 2018, the Thursday residency at Westport Saloon became the backbone of the live run. Week after week, Dusty Rust worked the songs in front of Kansas City crowds and built the following the old-fashioned way.

Along the way came shared bills with Dale Watson, Whitey Morgan, Hellbound Glory, JB Beverly, and others, plus a 2017 Ameripolitan Award nomination. In 2023, Jackalope Jamboree added another strong stop to the timeline.

The catalog now stretches from the 2013 self-titled release through Kansas City Cowboy, Stolen Horse, Secret Desert, and a recent wave of singles including "Singing With a Ghost," "Melinda," "Cougar," "If You're Gonna Leave Me," and "The Wagon Wheel." There is still a DIY streak through all of it, and the edges are still intact.
